Discharged

Employing photographic collage to show how powerful institutions use unfair practices and methods when it comes to their employees. They use solutions that will only benefit the ‘bosses’ in these institutions rather than thinking about the consequences these biased methods will have on their employees’ work and personal lives.

I was subjected to a similar situation in early 2023. I was unfairly dismissed, or ‘let go’, from my previous job as a domestic cleaner. I was given two days’ notice instead of the crucial two-week period. This left me feeling several negative emotions such as anger and frustration, in the aftermath of this sudden unexplained decision. It left me questioning whether it was something I did taking a heavy toll on me, shattering my confidence in myself and my work ethic. Using photographic collages, I convey all the emotions and thoughts I felt. Venting them into the background and photographic compositions.

‘Discharged’ demonstrates how unfair actions and practices set in place by large institutions negatively affect their employees mentally and physically. This series hopes to spread awareness of how unjustly employees are treated by large organizations and give perspective on how a person’s entire life is affected by the practices set in place by management. The series leaves us with the question: Is this what the future of employment and businesses holds for their employees?
